The Best Time to Get Married in Costa Rica

There is no perfect month to get married in Costa Rica. There is a perfect experience.

One of the first questions couples ask us when planning a Costa Rica wedding is: 'When is the best time to get married?'

It's a reasonable question. Costa Rica has a reputation for sunshine, tropical landscapes and beautiful weather. But the reality is more interesting — and much more varied.

Because Costa Rica doesn't really have one climate. And the best month for one couple may be completely different from the best month for another.

After photographing countless weddings here, we've learned that choosing your date isn't about finding the month with the least amount of rain. It's about understanding what each season gives you.

01 — THE DRY SEASON

For much of the Pacific coast, the dry season is exactly what many couples imagine when they picture a Costa Rica destination wedding.

If your dream is bright skies, outdoor celebrations and that classic beach-at-sunset feeling, the drier months — roughly from mid-December through April in many Pacific regions — can be a wonderful fit. But one of the first things we tell couples is this: Costa Rica's seasons do not line up with the seasons back home.

A summer wedding in the United States is not necessarily a summer-weather wedding in Costa Rica. Spring break does not mean spring weather here. Many couples choose a date around holidays or vacation schedules without realizing that Costa Rica is experiencing a completely different part of its year.

And dry does not mean mild. Depending on where you are getting married, these months can be hot — and, just as importantly, humid. We have heard versions of: “We know heat. We live in Texas.” And sometimes the difference is exactly that humidity. Hot and dry is not the same experience as hot and humid when you are wearing formal wedding attire for several hours.

That is why the season should influence more than your backup plan. It can influence your timeline, ceremony time, fabrics and even the color and formality of what you wear. A heavy black suit at an outdoor ceremony in the middle of a Costa Rican afternoon may be a very different experience from what the groom imagined.

The dry season is beautiful for good reason. Just make sure you are choosing it for the experience it actually offers — not simply because someone told you it is “the best time.”

02 — THE GREEN SEASON

This is where things get interesting.

During the green season, the rainforest becomes richer. Mountains become more dramatic. Waterfalls come alive. Everything feels intensely alive.

And yes, it can rain. But rain doesn't automatically mean a ruined wedding day. In fact, some couples deliberately choose this season because the mood they want is impossible to separate from the landscape at its greenest.

We have photographed couples who came specifically for that experience: rainforest, water, clouds, deeper greens and a more cinematic atmosphere. For them, a little rain was not an inconvenience to survive. It was part of why they came.

In many parts of Costa Rica, rain can arrive, transform the landscape, and disappear again. Sometimes the sky opens just in time for portraits. Sometimes the rain becomes part of the memory. And sometimes the most beautiful photograph of the entire wedding happens because the weather decided to do something unexpected.

But this is where expectations matter enormously. We can photograph a beautiful wedding in sunshine or rain. What makes us sad is seeing a couple arrive in August or September expecting uninterrupted blue skies simply because they pictured “Costa Rica” as a tropical postcard.

The happiest couples, in our experience, are not necessarily the ones who get perfect weather. They are the ones who understand the season they chose and know how to enjoy what it gives them.

03 — WEATHER IS LOCAL

Don't plan Costa Rica from a weather app alone.

Costa Rica is geographically small, but climatically diverse. A forecast for Guanacaste doesn't tell you what your wedding day will feel like in La Fortuna. And Manuel Antonio isn't the same as the Central Valley.

That also means you should be careful with broad questions like “What is Costa Rica like in November?” The better question is: “What is this part of Costa Rica usually like in November?”

If you are fixed on a beach wedding, the answer may lead you toward one coast or region rather than another. If you care more about lush gardens and rainforest, the same month can tell a completely different story inland.

This is one of those moments when a little research can save a lot of disappointment. Start with the experience you want, then look at the specific region and the specific time of year together.

That distinction can completely change how you plan.

04 — LIGHT MATTERS MORE THAN PEOPLE REALIZE

Weather is only half the story.

As photographers, we're always thinking about something couples don't necessarily see when they first visit a venue: Where will the sun be?

The same ceremony space can feel completely different at 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. The direction of the light affects your ceremony, portraits, reception, sunset and how your photographs feel.

And this is where “the best month” can become too simple a question. The date matters, but so does what you do with the hours you have. A beautiful season cannot completely solve a timeline that puts your most important portraits in the harshest part of the day.

We encourage couples to think about the entire experience together: when they are getting ready, when they will exchange vows, when guests will be outside, when they want portraits, and what the light is likely to be doing around them.

This is one reason we encourage couples to think about their entire wedding-day timeline, not just the ceremony time.

05 — SO, WHEN SHOULD YOU COME?

That depends on what you want Costa Rica to feel like.

Want sunshine, clearer skies and a classic outdoor beach experience? The drier months may be ideal.

Planning an indoor celebration at a beautiful resort or hotel? The season may matter less to the wedding itself and more to everything you want to experience before and after it.

And that is a question couples sometimes forget to ask: Are you coming to Costa Rica for one wedding weekend, or are you turning this into a honeymoon, a family trip or an adventure with friends?

Because the answer matters. A month that works beautifully for your ceremony may not create the version of Costa Rica you hoped to experience on your days off. If your dream is to spend a week exploring lush landscapes, beaches and adventure, think about the whole trip — not only the wedding day.

Have a specific venue or holiday weekend in mind? Start planning early. Care most about beautiful light? Think about the season and the daily timeline together.

We love a dry-season wedding with clear skies and golden light. We love the rainforest when it is deep green and alive. We have seen couples come prepared for rain and end up laughing with their friends on the beach, jumping into a pool or embracing a change of plans that became one of their favorite memories.

We have also seen the opposite: a beautiful wedding day made unnecessarily stressful because the couple arrived with an expectation that belonged to a different season.

So don't choose a date because someone told you it's “the best.” Choose it because it gives you the experience you're actually looking for — and because you understand what Costa Rica is likely to feel like when you arrive.

The best Costa Rica wedding date isn't necessarily the driest. It's the date that allows the place, the people and the way you want to celebrate to come together beautifully.
